Chennai Super Kings geared up for its title defence with an optional practice session at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium here on Wednesday. Skipper M.S. Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravichandran Ashwin of the World Cup winning squad were absent while the rest were put through their paces by coach Stephen Fleming. The main nets saw new recruits Tim Southee and Nuwan Kulasekara share their first session with the team. The duo, along with Albie Morkel, Joginder Sharma and Sudeep Tyagi had a slightly extended session, bowling first at a set of stumps and later at Anirudha Srikkanth and Faf du Plessis. Scott Styris also had a hit later on. Wriddhiman Saha donned the gloves. At the outer nets, Shadab Jakati engaged M. Vijay while S. Badrinath also spent some time on the adjacent track. CSK will take on Kolkata Knight Riders, led by Gautam Gambhir, in the tournament opener, here on Friday.
